Danzig shuts down 7thHouse.com ~ 12/21/2004
Probably the most well known Danzig fan site The7thHouse.com was ordered taken offline by Glenn Danzig recently. Reportedly, Glenn Danzig wanted more control over the information being distributed via the website. Also mentioned was that Danzig wanted the traffic directed to the Danzig band's official web site Danzig-Verotik.com. There was reportedly no notice of the shutdown and the 7thHouse.com message board members were left to find alternative means of remaining in contact with one another after it's closing.

Ran by long-time fan Devilman138, the 7thHouse.com has been a fan-run and supported website for over 8 years. Rumors are circulating that the shutdown is related to events in Tuba City, Arizona where Glenn Danzig was "punched out" by North Side Kings singer Danny Marianinho and video of the altercation was distributed over the internet.

Two fans sites have sprung up with intentions on keeping the 7thHouse.com message board community together; The New 7th House and The House That Screams.

A letter to Courtney ~ 12/20/2004
Part of a sale of Rock 'N' Roll memorobillia, a letter from Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain to his then-wife Courtney Love was sold for over $19,000. Written as Kurt was hallucinating on LSD in a British hotel, the undated 2-page letter is headed "Courtney Love Breakfast Fax".

Kurt asked a receptionist at the Sheffield Hotel to fax it to Love for him. The receptionist asked Cobain what she should do with the original, and he said she could keep it as a souvenir. The letter - written in black ballpoint on lined 8 x 11-inch paper - was written by Cobain while he was on tour with Nirvana in the U.K. in November of 1991.

The opening of the letter describes his acid trip — "Out of all the times I've been on acid, I've never been able to hallucinate with such repetitive control. I'm hallucinating at will, over and over again in this English shoebox with pastel curtains and normal little victorian [sic] lamps and drawers. It's all too normal and impossible to explain."

Bob Marley, Life after death ~ 12/16/2004
Bob Marley has inspired millions with his musical attributes, but is his message of "one world, one love" enough to proclaim him a national hero? Members of Bob Marley's estate seem to think so. They are lobbying to declare Marley a national hero in Jamaica, one of Jamaica's highest honors.

Marley was born on February 6, 1945 in Jamaica to eighteen year old (black) Cedella Booker and fifty year old (white) quartermaster, Captain Norval Marley. In the late 60's he moved to Trenchtown, Kingston where he formed "The Wailing Wailers". After he moved to America in 1966 for several months, he returned to Jamaica to form who are now known as "The Wailers".

Marley wrote songs of protests, oppression, and love. He became ill because of an ill-treated toe wound, which was diagnosed as cancer. For eight months he was treated for this disease, but died May 11, 1981, age 36, in a Miami hospital. His body now rests in a mausoleum at "Nine Mile", Marley's birthplace.

"Anywhere you go in the world the first thing people think of when they hear Jamaica is Bob Marley," said Jacqueline Knight-Campbell, who is organizing the campaign for the Bob Marley Foundation. Only seven Jamaicans have been named national heroes. We shall see if Marley will become the eighth.

The foundation is also seeking to make February 6, Marley's birthday, a national holiday. The group is planning special celebrations, including a concert and a block party in the capital of Kingston, to mark his 60th birthday next year.

Marley may be a hero to some, but if anything, he is a legend.

Smithbridge's "Goodbye"... Hellooooo?!
When I first heard the "Last Chance" demo James Lam sent to me in 2002 of his new project "Smithbridge" I thought the sound quality was so much better than the old original Demonsix demo. I thought this whole studio-in-a-box or home studio via the computer thing is awesome. I didn't foresee the vast amount of music that would be flowing out the pores of these guys. I mean they must sweat musical notes & bass clefs, and shit musical staff paper... perhaps they breathe tablature paper.

Whatever the case may be they have managed to write and record - via their humble home studio - 3 full demos of Punk in less than 2 years. Not only are they motivated, but they did the recording on the fly of learning how to record. Got an old Dell, some 'free' multi-tracking software and recorded some tunes. They managed to make sense of the multi-tracking software having never really used a computer.

As wine gets better with age, experience does wonders for recording. And now 2 or so years later, James decided to test what he had learned and apply it to re-recording a large number of those original demo tracks. 21 of them to be exact. All re-recorded with a little more experience and a sharper approach. New and improved, cleaner, crisper.

To bring forward a few of the finer points of the new CD lets pick a few of the stand outs. Probably my favorite or one of has got to be "Devil Made Me". Always one of my favs the recording here is so much crisper, and clearer than the original "We Are" version. While the method of the recording is still intact here the lo-fi is gone or at least cleaned up a bit. When I say the method is still intact I'm referring to the bass on the right guitar on the left recording method. A true punk element it's good to see how well it can work. And like a $20 hooker, it's 'working it' here.

Another of my favs is "Duct Tape And Paper Towels". The lyrics hit the spot while the smooth, creamy distorted guit pours down your ear lobe. Again much improvement in quality and clarity. While all the dominate Smithbridge tunes are done here - "Redneck Girl", "Whiskey", & "Asshole" to mention a few - "Hell's Party" I have to point out. While the awesome feedback soaked intro is replaced here with an effect driven one, this tune is a perfect example of how much better these recordings are sonically. Now that I listen to them in an A/B fashion the crackle of the over-peaked guitar track in the original stands out like corn in your shite.

While I'd listen to the old ones just as often... the new CD is a blessing. Better sound mechanics is icing on the Punkrock cake!

What happened to Ol' Dirty Bastard? ~ 12/15/2004
Finally the autopsy of Ol' Dirty Bastard has come out today. Ol' Dirty Bastard, aka ODB, Dirt McGirt, Big Baby Jesus, and his birth name Russell Jones, died on November 13, 2004 at "36 Records" recording studio in Manhattan. The 35 year old, father of 13, had traces of cocaine and Tramadol (a painkiller) in his system. This in turn caused Dirty to collapse and die from a heart attach.

Dirty, one of the original founders of "Wu Tang Clan", was just recently released from jail in 2003 after serving two years for drug charges. His wild behavior caused him several trips to jail, some time in the penitentiary, and a rap sheet that could blanket a car. It is ironic, though his crimes being nonviolent, that in the end the only person he hurt was himself.

But why did it take over a month for medical examiners to perform this autopsy? The only answer given is that authorities needed to do extensive medical tests. Here you have it, the autopsy of one of the 90's most influential, but unlawful hip-hop artists.

Hollowed Cain
First time I heard Hollowed Cain was back about 5 years ago when James – of Demonsix and Smithbridge – played to me a CD-R he had gotten from them. James had been friends with Dana – singer and lead guitar player of HC – since their teens. James had come down from Pennsylvania to visit. After the initial reunion and hours of self induced intoxication, he played me the CD-R. It was apparently a demo the band had cut recently. After a quick listen, I made a few comments about how they sounded something like Iron Maiden and we continued drinking ourselves into a stupor.

It was maybe a couple years later, I was visiting James in Pennsylvania that he played me – this time on cassette – a handful of complied recordings by HC. Among the list of tunes was a song called “Practice To Deceive”. I dug this song the most do to the crazy high-pitched howl heard at the end of each chorus.

If you asked me to define Hallowed Cain’s sound, I’d be hard-pressed to come up with a straight-forward answer. I’d probably find myself listing off a few similar bands but then trying to define the Ifs, Ands, or Buts. They have what is almost impossible to find in your mainstream, radio-friendly music. Something I like to call… “Originality”.

For those of us into the harder side of music, the unpolished, un-influenced by pop culture, radio unfriendly real music, Hallowed Cain fits the bill. If you can manage a trip to see them live don’t pass it up. Show dates are available via the website.

Take some time to visit Hallowed Cain’s website and see for yourself what I mean by ‘originality’. The site is fluid with plenty of downloadable full length MP3s, pictures, a bio and more. Be sure to sign the guestbook and tell them AnNy sent ya.

Dimebag.. on a personal note... ~ 12/12/2004
I've been thinking a lot about the Dimebag Darrell shooting. Hard to comprehend really. I am not a huge Pantera or Damageplan fan. I mean I dig Pantera; they were definitely a part of my music collection. Obviously, I wasn't affected like his devoted fans were. Yet I can relate in a way because I was such a huge fan of Nirvana. And what happened there was devastating for me in a way. But of course this is very different. Kurt took his own life. In hindsight you saw it coming in a way. Not with Dimebag. Dimebag was murdered. And not even murdered at home... or in some secretive, unwitnessed fashion but out in front of hundreds of adoring fans. Unlike Kurt, people actually witnessed the abrupt fall of their... well... in a way... their God.

How horrifying is that? To actually witness something like that is just unthinkable. From that you’re surely changed for life. I'm a hard thinker when it comes to thinks like this. I'm just really disturbed that there are people that believe the world revolves around them to the point that they can take something to a level like this. I mean to have some kinda vendetta against a person so strong that you'd murder them in cold blood in front of hundreds of onlookers. And I'm using the word vendetta loosely... because Dime didn't have a feud with this guy. They weren't mortal enemies. He didn't even know this guy. Hell, if Dime had even 2 seconds to realize what was about to happen to him, he was probably thinking... "Who the hell is this guy"?

These kinds of things always make me think so deeply I can easily put myself in a mini-depression trying to make since of it all. And then I think of his brother, Vinnie Paul, who was right there... forced to watch his brother's murder unable to do anything about it. That kind of thing puts you in your place. That's the kind of thing that changes a person forever. I wish Mr. Paul the best in what will definitely be one of the hardest events he'll ever have to come to terms with.

Then there are the others. I believe 4 others died. Concert goers who died just trying to enjoy their favorite band play a show. And I believe one or two were employees of either the venue or the band itself. In all 5 people died at the hands of a madman.

This madman that will remain nameless. I've spent a little time thinking about the shooter. I have a few thoughts and many questions I could type here. But I won't. That's what this guy deserves is no attention. He will not get his name posted upon these pages. His message, if there was even such, will not be heard here. For him I can only say... well... nothing.

To the friends and families of the victims I share utter sadness with; love and compassion still survive among us. Let this not be a lesson in hate, but through the acts of all who have spoken out in caring, let it be a lesson in love, compassion, and sympathy for our brothers and sisters.

Dimebag Darrell Abbot - R.I.P. 1966-2004 ~ 12/11/2004
Just wanted to express my sorrow for another traggic loss to music. It's a shock to us all that such a traggic event can occure. To die at the hands of an obsession is truely a life cut short. Thoughts are with his fellow bandmates including his brother Vinnie Paul. And also to the concert goers killed and/or injured as well.

Shred in Peace Dimebag.
